I can’t do anything without playing music in the background. It might be just how I’m wired, it might be some weird chemical dependency, it might be an unknown fear of loneliness. No clue. All I know is that if I’m doing anything, whether it’s writing these words right now, folding laundry, mowing the lawn, sitting at the beach by my lonesome- you name it, I like to have music playing. I once was talking to a friend whose husband had just written a book. She said how he’d write in total silence. He couldn’t be distracted. Now it obviously works for him as he’s written not one, but two b0oks by now and I haven’t written any, but it seemed crazy to me. I like music blasting when I’m writing. Gets me all jacked up like a frickin’ unicorn with something to say about something.
But to each his own.
This morning I woke up with one thought in my head- I want to find an English Premier League team to root for. America’s run in the World Cup didn’t just stir feelings of patriotism in me, it made me realize that dude, watching soccer is fun. Like really fun. It has everything you’d want from a televised sporting event- constant action, tension, drama, excitement and a time limit. With my love of baseball having become increasingly localized (Red Sox or nothing basically,) I was looking for a new sport to hitch my wagon too- especially a sport that has an enjoyable regular season unlike basketball or hockey. No offense to either one, but your regular seasons are a joke.
America’s soccer league, the MLS, wouldn’t do. I already knew it was kind of bush league and it was confirmed when I heard one of ESPN’s hired guns for the World Cup say that you just don’t see World Cup-level soccer played in the MLS. And that’s what I want- World Cup-level soccer. Give me free tickets to a MLS game and I’ll go. But I’m not paying for tickets or sitting down to watch one of their games.
That left the English Premier League.
It was time to do some research.
But first… I needed to put together a playlist to listen to while I conducted my extensive research.
