Plus Side/Non-Plus Side: Gotham

Gotham-TV-Show-Fox-LogoGotham is a show about Batman, but it’s just sans Batman.

Okay, interesting enough.

Gotham is a show about Jim Gordon, but it’s just about Gordon before he became Police Commissioner.

Okay, still interesting.

Gotham is a show about Batman villains, but it’s about them before they became villains.

Okay, that’s kind of interesting too.

Fox, fresh off the news that Gotham, the prequel to Batman being Batman, was officially picked up, released the official trailer for the show. It’s got that dude from The O.C in it, as well as Jimmy the Cab Driver. That fella from The O.C. plays the young Gordon- apparently like most reasonable males, he elected to grow the mustache later in life. I can’t stress this enough- mustaches aren’t acceptable until you’re at least 35 years older. There’s also a slew of young Batman villains in this trailer- Penguin, the Riddler, Cat Woman- all so young and troubled. Jada Pinkett-Smith is there too.

I don’t know what to make of this. I want to like it, but I also want to face reality and you know, there’s a better chance it’ll bad than it’ll be good. #science.

On the plus side, it’s an interesting concept. What was Gotham like before Batman showed up? Well, this lets us find out.

On the non-plus side, it has a CW feel, which is not a compliment.

On the plus side, spending more time with the origins behind some Batman villains could be cool. The movies really only touched on these aspects of the story briefly in the first act. Now they can let it breath a little bit.

On the non-plus side, do we really want to know more about the villains?

And then I have a couple questions…

Question 1: Will this show tie in to any of the existing Batman movies or is it setting up a Batman reboot?

Question 2: When does the show take place?

Question 3: How close will the show come to taking place when Batman starts being Batman?

Question 4: The murder of Bruce Wayne’s parents are shown. Is this a case Gordon tries to solve? Didn’t Joker kill the Waynes? If he did, did he ever get caught? Depending on this, will the show follow a specific comic book story line or make it’s own?

Question 5: Will Gotham be any good?

I don’t know. But I’ll probably give it an episode or two before I stay or go.

Look for this show to air sometime next year.

  1. I’m pretty excited to see this because I think it’s a great concept. I’m not sure about tying in young Bruce Wayne so early on in the series though. That’s the moment a lot of fans will be waiting for and it seems like they are going to introduce that moment fairly quickly.
